I had a great birthday weekend: I ate steak, shot guns, went off road in my Jeep, and spent time with my family. I got to shoot the following: .38 caliber, .45 caliber, .22 caliber, .357 caliber, .44 caliber (aka hogleg), M1 Garand, 12 Gauge (full choke and not so, full choke), and my personal favorite now, .36 caliber black powder model 1861 Navy. And since no post is quite complete without pictures, here’s a few of where we took a “detour” off road this weekend.

It snowed off and on all day on Saturday, and the great thing about having a Jeep is that you get to see things that’s hidden away from the interstate or the main thorough fares.

So I got up for work yesterday and logged into my email to thin the noise out before actually GOING to work and I came across this little gem…

Lowe’s commitment is to be customers’ first choice for home improvement products, services, and information whenever and wherever they choose to shop. To meet that commitment, we must continue to invest in key initiatives to improve experiences for customers and stay on the leading edge as a home improvement company. (stay with me here. We’re getting to the good part) We must also constantly review and improve our internal processes and make tough choices about where we allocate our resources.

In 2012, we will evaluate the way we staff and support the multi-channel world in which we compete… blah blah blah blah blah …The first step of the re-engineering process is a reduction in the size of our staff in the US Customer Support Centers (CSCs)… blah blah blah blah blah.

And then I thought, “Hey, I work in one of the Customer Support Centers.” Here we go again, This is how the lay offs at Bank of America started. Don’t get out the tissue box just yet. I got excited, then I calmed down. God has NOT forsaken me yet and to date, He has provided quite well for me and my family. I had gotten the “itch” to move a while back. To be more clear, I believe God had planted the seed of us moving on to something different, something that He has for us for awhile now, and I even shared that with some of my family, but I have a good job and I am “comfortable”. Humans tend to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. Is this the “outside force”? Is this God plucking the feathers out of my comfortable nest to get me to fly? Can I take this as a letter of commitment that God is in control of my life and He is directing me? I’m the one that posted “whenever, wherever” to the Lord at the beginning of the year (see the blog in January)

…Let the games begin!

“‘Political Correctness’ is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

I owe my daughter an apology. I have often chided her for her huge collection of shoes, when I myself have quite a collection and just grew it by another pair today. I can’t help it, I like a good looking boot. I was looking for some new work shoes/boots and found a nice pair of Florsheims, but I was lured away by a pair for everyday casual wear. I like boots and I like jackets. I have a growing collection of hats too, now that I think about it.

My advice is to stay away from Zappos. They make it too easy to find stuff you like. But can you blame me? Look at these boots!

Caleb will be starting school, Shelby will be starting High school, and Andie will be starting college. That in itself will be epic, but there’s more. I don’t know what it is, I don’t know where it is, but I do know who it is. God has directed my life (with or without my cooperation) for His purpose, for His reasons. Up to now, I have been more or less, just a body. Just a person filling a seat in a pew. Just a “fill-in”, just a substitute. Let this serve to be my battle cry: “Lord, whenever, wherever, I am willing.”

School plays, Cantatas, traffic, shopping trips, chaos, sleep deprivation, 29 hours worth of errands and only 24 hours in a day to complete them… While I was at work the other day, we received word that one of my peers’ wife passed away unexpectedly. That type of news tends to stop you in your tracks, especially in the midst of all the holiday chaos. My thoughts immediately switched gears to my mom and dad, and my older brother whom have all passed away. I miss them dearly, more so than I thought I ever would. I then started thinking about my immediate family and how devastating it would be to experience a loss now.

It’s a sobering topic, but one that screams “SILVER LINING HERE!” more so than any other. I cannot control my own mortality no more than I can influence the path of the sun in the solar system. The silver lining is this: God has given your days to you not to worry about dying, but to celebrate living. People go through their entire lives worrying about not tempting fate or making sure EVERY germ is cleaned or not putting themselves in harm’s way. “Finding Nemo” had a great quote when the over protective father talked about protecting his son so nothing would happen to him, and another fish pointed out, “If you don’t let anything happen to him, then NOTHING will happen to him.” I have been accused of taking too many risks, whether it’s riding my motorcycle, or driving my Jeep, or climbing and hiking. But I am living. I am leaving my mortality to God and I am experiencing all I can that He has provided for us on this earth. You really ought to try going over 100 miles per hour – its exhilarating! Everyone should jump out of an airplane at least once in their life, its so peaceful and serene. The beauty of a coral reef at 100 feet underwater is unmatched on land and nothing is more majestic than the horizon of the Rockies at 14,000 feet! I know this to be true because I’ve done them.

I want to teach my children to do more than exist, I want to teach them to live, to really live!

My Jeep has been a DD or “Daily Driver” and the price of gas was starting to wear on me. I came to the conclusion that I had to get a “commuter” to ease up on the gas consumption. I knew I didn’t want to spend that much and wasn’t in a hurry to buy anything, but when I went to pick up the tag for the BMW, my friend said, “You still looking for a commuter?” of course I said, “Yeah, what’ya got?”. I took the keys and drove the Miata and it was in really good shape for 16 year old car. I took it home that afternoon.

I found out really quick that the little car is REALLY fun to drive, like riding in a go-kart! I took it up Brushy and the fun factor went up even more, not to mention I was getting 320 miles to a tank of gas (about 10.5 gallons). I added a “Style Bar” to stiffen up the frame and cut down on the “cuteness” of the car and I made a windblocker for it as well. The windblocker makes a HUGE difference at speed w/ the top down. The girls can ride in the car and their hair not get blown around. I have lots of ideas on suspension upgrades, tires, etc. (Like I need another project vehicle)

What a weekend! My buddy and I decided to spend the weekend in Harlan, Ky at the Black Mountain Offroad park. I packed up the Jeep Friday morning: tents, tools, recovery gear, food, clothes, camping supplies, etc. I was going to pick up my brother on the way, but he couldn’t make it. I stopped in anyway to say hello since it was on my way.

I pulled in at the Harlan County Campgrounds at 1530 hrs. Chuck and Josh were there waiting on me, so I quickly got my park pass and paid for the camping. We then proceeded up the mountain to the camping spot Chuck had already picked out for us.

We got the tents set up, got a fire prepped, then headed on up the mountain into the park for a quick recon of the area before heading back into town for supper.

The trails were really slick from the rain earlier in the week and that afternoon, so making it up the mountain to the trails was interesting in itself. The park has a green trail (easy), blue trails (intermediate to difficult), red trails (hard to extreme, body damage probable), and then the orange dotted and red dotted trails (highly modified, body damage guaranteed). Of course, we hit the first red trail we came to (48) and it was not bad at all. We ended up riding on a lot of the red trails, they had some great hill climbs and down hills, and the rain multiplied the fun factor.

Pictures don’t do justice to the steepness of these hills; at one point before ascending, Josh yelled back to me, “Tell my mom I loved her!” The red trails skirted the ridge line and offered great views at around 3400 feet.

Be sure to go to the photos page and look at the Harlan gallery where I posted more pics. We had a great weekend and I can’t wait to go back!

My first full day off in awhile, so we decided to go to Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth Of Wilson, Va. This is a nice state park on the top of Mt. Rogers, but what makes it special is the wild ponies that roam the ridges in the area. They are Shetlands and are truly wild, grazing the balds and high pastures in the park.

The weather was really windy with the feeder bands of Irene blowing over, making it chilly, damp, and VERY windy. Caleb finished petting one of the ponies and turned away quick to move on towards the rocks and the pony nipped him in the chest. The nip bruised him pretty good, but all Caleb said was, “Ouch.” Later, he said he wanted to shoot that horse for biting him.

We moved on to some rocks (which Caleb loves) and climbed around a bit.

After being blown around the rocks, we picked up some “fans” on the way back down the trail. We petted the ponies for a bit then headed back to the Jeep picking and eating blackberries along the way.

Grayson is a great place to backpack for beginners and fun for the kids because of the ponies. We had a great day!
